The Civic Awards scheme provided an opportunity for the Mayor, on behalf of the Borough, to recognise the achievements of individuals and organisations who had made a real difference to the community.

This was the 6th year of the Awards Scheme recognising the contribution nominees within the categories had made to the community.

The quality of nominations, across all categories, had been exceptional.

The winners had been invited to the meeting and it was the Worshipful the Mayor's great pleasure to present each in turn with a certificate and their award as a thank you for their achievements.

- Young Persons Award - Liani Weston

The winner of The Young Persons Award went to Liani Weston.

Liani had been part of the Lets Take Action group for several years and over that time had really shone. Liani had won this award due to her commitment to the project and her endless motivation to shape and add to the service which was offered to Looked After Children.

- Services to the Community Award - Individual - Victor Manjero

Victor Manjero had always been extending his hand to every person he had met. Without prejudice, discrimination or expecting anything in return, this award winner eagerly and constantly helped the community through serving the church, being the voice of many, and somebody whom anyone could lean on.

- Services to the Community Award - Groups and Organisations - Blood-Run Emergency Volunteers

Blood-Run Emergency Volunteers did a tremendous job, ferrying essential blood supplies by motor cycle between local hospitals and Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary. They operated from 5pm to 7am on weekdays and covered 24hrs at weekends. The volunteers rode in all weather conditions, to help save others.

- Special Services to the Community Award - Individual Award - Posthumous Award to Martin Dixon

Martin Dixon rode a motorcycle for the Blood Run Emergency Volunteer Service for Cleveland and North Yorkshire from 2011 until he tragically died in a road traffic accident in Hartlepool whilst carrying blood supplies from Hartlepool General Hospital on Monday November 28th 2016. He was on call for an average of 120 hours each month and sadly he lost his own life whilst helping others.

All these volunteers did marvellous work in their spare time and The Worshipful the Mayor felt an award would honour Martin's work as well as highlighting their contribution to the community.

- Services to the Community Award - Business - Axiom Engineering

Axiom Engineering had grown successfully and consistently, and ran a global operation from offices in Stockton-On-Tees. From inspection and preventative maintenance, through to understanding failure or problems in the structure of assets, Axiom combined expertise in mechanical and materials engineering. The company was enjoying a period of expansion and job creation.

- Health & Wellbeing Award - Green Links

Green Links was a community project which provided a lifeline to people living with Dementia, with a free programme of outdoor activities which were shown to improve the lives of those living with Dementia.

The programme focused on connecting people with Dementia to the outdoors and gave sufferers the opportunity to practice gardening skills, grow their own fruit and vegetables, and be more active.

- The Green Award - Billingham Beck Valley Country Park Volunteer Rangers

Billingham Beck Valley Country Park Volunteer Rangers had assisted in the management of the popular Council owned site for over 25 years.

There were 12 active volunteers who met at the site every Thursday throughout the year to undertake practical conservation work. They were happy to work outside whatever the weather conditions and made a vital contribution to both the public who used the site and the wildlife there.

- Carer / Foster Carer Award - Damon and Lisa Zadrozny

Damon and Lisa Zadrozny were parents of three daughters, who had all played a significant role in the family's commitment to fostering.

Since being approved as foster carers in 2012, they had provided excellent care for seven children. They were completely dedicated to each child they cared for, and the family were hoping to adopt one child who was placed with them at just a few weeks old.

The Worshipful the Mayor reminded Members that at a recent Council meeting Members had unanimously supported a motion supporting Council staff. The Customer Service Awards was for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council staff who had been a shining example of outstanding customer service.

The Worshipful the Mayor recognised the winners of the Customer Services Awards within the following categories:-

- Pride of Stockton Award Winner

This was a joint nomination with 3 winners for demonstrating on a daily basis that the welfare of residents, business and visitors to Stockton were of paramount importance to them. They were passionate about Stockton Town Centre and were committed to the reduction of crime and anti-social behaviour and had increased the feeling of safety for business, residents and visitors to the Borough making Stockton a better, cleaner place to live, work and visit. The winners were:-

• Richard Beddard - Markets and Town Centre Manager
• Tony Roach - Town Centre Enforcement Officer
• Chris Dunwell - Town Centre Enforcement Officer

Extra Mile Award Winner

This award was introduced to recognise those employees who through hard work and determination went significantly beyond the requirements of their job and the expectations of those they served. This category was judged by the Customer Service Excellence Assessors who were overwhelmed with the nominations they had received and had found it very difficult to make a decision.

Anthony Slee was the chosen Winner for his drive and support he gaves to Stockton Library, Customer Services and the public. Taking on roles that were above and beyond his duties.

Team Award Winners

This fantastic team provided support to the group of young people who were looked after at Tilery House under the leadership of Homes Manager Gillian Mitchell. The passion they had shown in their roles on a daily basis to get the best outcome for looked after children was amazing.

The winners were Tilery House Looked After Children's Team and the representatives to receive this award were:-

• Jo Lee - Service Manager
• Gillian Mitchell - Home Manager
• Garth Illingworth - Residential Care Officer

Star Employee

The winner of this award was Scott Martin. Scott joined his new team just a few months ago and had shown an outstanding effort getting up to speed with systems and projects. His enthusiastic approach had been highly commended by a number of teams and staff over the whole Council.
