Members were provided with an information pack from Tees Active and the PCT regarding ways in which they were tackling obesity. Members had submitted written questions prior to the meeting and a written response to these questions had been provided.

Steve Chaytor provided further detail on the written responses that he had provided and welcomed questions.

Further information was requested regarding the figures for under 14 year olds accessing services within Tees Active. Steve Chaytor would provide a breakdown of this information to the Scrutiny Officer.

Discussion was held on swimming pools within schools in the borough and how extensively they were used. It was suggested that Tees Active consider whether they could utilise these pools for activities in the future. It was stated that Tees Active had in the past managed the pool at Abbeyhill School and was anticipating using this pool for some swimming lessons when Billingham Forum pool was closed.

Members discussed the catering provided within the cafe at Splash and other Tees Active establishments and enquired whether it was feasible for calorie/fat content information to be provided on the meals provided. Steve Chaytor stated that he would enquire whether this was feasible and report back to Members.

Discussion was held on food level standards that apply to schools and whether these could be applied to sports establishments etc.

Members received a presentation from Cllr Mrs Cains following her visit along with Cllr Cains and Cllr Lewis to Sunderland City Council who were champions in tackling obesity. Cllr Mrs Cains highlighted the following:- The cost of obesity, the importance of tackling obesity from birth, the introduction of soft play and other activities for younger children prior to school age, providing adequate support to those who needed to loose weight and maintaining this support once the weight had been lost, portion control/the diet plate, psychology. Members requested information on how the initiatives provided by Sunderland City Council had been funded. Ingrid Ablett-Spence would make enquiries and inform the Scrutiny Officer.

The next meeting would be held on Wednesday 26th November and the following witnesses had been invited to attend:- Rosemary Young, Spatial Plans Manager; Barry Jackson, Development Services Manager; Neil Ellison, Group Leader Road Safety; Jonathan Kibble, Senior Road Safety Officer. Members were requested to submit questions prior to the meeting where possible. The Chairman would be unable to be in attendance at the next meeting and would submit written questions.

The tripartite meeting would be held on 6th January prior to the Committee meeting on 14th January, 2009.

The meeting to be held on 18th February, 2009 would be to consider outstanding action plans and monitoring reports.

The Chairman and Councillor Broughton would be attending a meeting of the Youth Assembly to find out their opinions on obesity.

It was stated that a report had been produced by Mark Reilly, Public Health Intelligence Service Tees Primary Care Trusts on the connections between alcohol and obesity. The Scrutiny Officer would provide a copy of this report to Members.
