Members were provided with a copy of the draft submission to the Department for Education's Call for Evidence on Exclusions. A number of additions were suggested by the Committee to include: more information on the impact on the Pupil Referral Unit and alternative education, and concerns relating to elective home education.

Members also discussed feedback from the recent visits to schools and the various approaches taken. Members had visited North Shore, Outwood Academy Bishopsgarth, and St Michael's Academy.

It was noted that some schools were under great pressure to rapidly improve and this may be influencing the approaches taken within some Academy Trusts.

Members were keen to see that where interventions were made with individual pupils to address and understand their behaviours, enough time needed to be given for these to work.

It was also agreed to develop and submit a response to the Department for Education's separate Call for Evidence on Home Education.
