The first review of the Children and Young People Select Committee for 2008 was to be a review of obesity. The Committee would be working to its wider remit in that it would consider the issue for both children and adults.

The Scrutiny Liaison Committee (SLF) met on 25th March 2008 to discuss the topics for the Council's select committees during 2008/9. The SLF prioritised the topics which were then assigned to the committee with the most closely aligned terms of reference. The Children and Young People Select Committee was allocated the topic of obesity and was asked to widen its focus to include adults as well as children when examining this issue.

The Committee would be supported in its review by Elizabeth Shassere, Acting Locality Director of Public Health, North Tees Primary Care Trust who was developing an Obesity Strategy Development Group in the borough.

In order to assist the Committee a number of documents were provided to Members. In 2004 the North Tees Primary Care Trust Health improvement Partnership produced Obesity: A Digest for Stockton which provides a summary of the data, trends, evidence and interventions related to obesity. More recently, in November 2007, the North East Public Health Observatory produced a North East update report about obesity.

The draft scope and project plan were provided for Members to discuss.

The Chair requested that a standard item be placed on future agendas - Chairman's Update.
