Members discussed the evidence gathered so far for their review of Obesity. At the joint meeting held on 30th July Members had received evidence from Steve Chaytor, Managing Director of Tees Active Leisure (TAL), Members felt that further information was still required from this witness and requested that he be invited to attend another meeting.

Anita Brown would be invited to attend the meeting on 24th September. A Radio 4 interview regarding Obesity had been recorded and would be played prior to questioning.

Members discussed the role of GP's and Elizabeth Shassere would investigate inviting a GP to a meeting to provide evidence.

Discussion was held on inviting Simon Wilson, Head of Performance (Children Education and Social Care) to a future meeting to discuss performance target/measures that exist or could be developed.

Members discussed the Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives Strategy Group who had been undertaking an exercise to map all of the activities and groups throughout the borough. It was felt important to have a comprehensive list to identify any gaps in the service. An overarching strategy was currently being identified by Sports Development Team to bring together the Green Strategy and Outdoor Play Strategy etc.

Members also wished to discuss extended schools in more detail as well as planning issues in relation to school fields being fenced off. It was requested that the appropriate officers be invited to a future meeting.

Discussion was also held on the School Travel Plan and whether this was having an impact on children's health. It was reported that the Regeneration and Transport Select Committee had undertaken a review of the School Travel Plan and would be receiving an update on their Action Plan in the near future.

It was requested that the Scrutiny Officer look into any past reviews on Obesity by other authorities and provide information to the Committee.

Members agreed that as there was still further evidence that was required which would result in a number of further meetings being held, that the final report be delayed. The Scrutiny Officer would update the project plan and identify further meeting dates and indicate when the report would be finalised in order to be submitted to Executive Scrutiny Committee and Cabinet.
