Consideration was given to the content of the draft minutes of the meeting held on 14th January 2008.

As part of the Review of Sustainable School Travel Strategy Members received evidence from Khalid Azam (Joint Strategic Commissioner), Pauline Beall (Business Manager: Stockton Local Children Safeguarding Board), Mike Chicken (Environment Project Manager).

The evidence presented by Khalid Azam (Joint Strategic Commissioner) covered the following keys areas:-

* National Support Team for Child Obesity
* The Action Plan for Child Obesity
* The need for a link between the Action Plan and Schools
* The need for a Champion for Child Obesity
* The Healthy Eating Strategy for Children

Members were then given the opportunity to ask questions and make comments on the evidence. Members asked for further information regarding the "Walking Bus" that was in operation in the Borough.

The evidence presented by Pauline Beall (Business Manager: Stockton Local Children Safeguarding Board) covered the following keys areas:-

* The role of the Stockton Local Children Safeguarding Board
* How the Stockton Local Children Safeguarding Board could feed into the scrutiny process
* Other partner agencies involvement
* Safe recruitment and appropriate training
* Bullying issues

Members were then given the opportunity to ask questions and make comments on the evidence. Members asked if the School Travel Plans were discussed with the Stockton Local Children Safeguarding Board. Pauline Beall outlined that the School Travel Plans had not been discussed with the Board but it would be something they would be interested in feeding into.

Members requested that they receive further information on the Stockton Local Children Safeguarding Board including the role and responsibilities of the Board and the representatives on the Board.

The evidence presented by Mike Chicken (Environment Project Manager) covered the following keys areas:-

* Climate Change Bill
* Stockton on Tees Climate Change Action Plan 2007
* Alternatives to the car - walking and cycling
* Examples of good practice - walking and walking to school

Members were then given the opportunity to ask questions and make comments on the evidence that had been presented to them. Members discussed benefits of each school in the Borough having a School Travel Plan.

Members thanked the witnesses for their attendance at the meeting.

The Scrutiny Officer presented a copy of the letters that had been sent to local schools with regard gathering evidence for the review.

Roland Todd (Labour Market Co-Ordinator) presented Members with the Review of Employability Action Plan.

Members discussed the circulation of the minutes of the Stockton Employability Consortium. Members felt that the minutes should be made available to all Members of the Council.
