Consideration was given to the draft minutes of the meeting held on 17th July 2012.

Members received information regarding current and potential alternative energy sources and technologies which were as follows:

-Solar energy Generation
-Wind Energy
-Ground/Air Source Heat
-Biomass
-District Heating/Combined Heating Plant
-Energy from waste
-Other Energy Sources (Coal, Hydro, Wave and Tidal)

The main issues discussed were as follows:

-PV Solar panels costs would be recouped within eight years or less dependent on rise on energy costs.
-Energy conservation and energy efficiency was still a priority to the Council along with finding alternative energy supplies.
-Working with authorities within the Tees Valley and other authorities to ensure value for money, information sharing and to avoid duplication.
-Investigation into the underground gasification of coal cleanly in the North East was being progressed by Newcastle University.

The Committee requested the following further information:

-An options appraisal of current and potential energy sources including timescales for implementation

Consideration was given to the project plan and it was noted that procurement, relating to energy supply, would be presented at the next meeting and an options appraisal could be provided at the next meeting.

The Scrutiny Officer advised that no new information was available for the scheduled update for welfare Reform. An update would be presented at the next meeting.
